The Canadian Christmas tree industry has developed the following best management practices to prevent pests from hitchhiking a ride on Christmas trees during transportation through regulated areas:
- 1. Make use of good insect and pest management practices throughout the season.
- • Employ cultural practices that will increase the health and vigour of the trees, making them more resistant to insects and disease
- • Monitor for insects and disease on a regular basis, and record results
- • When necessary, use appropriate control measures and keep detailed records of all treatments
- • Initiate follow-up monitoring to keep track degree of control
- 2. Cut tree as late as possible
- • Cutting trees as late in the season and as close to shipping as possible ensures freshness and decreases the incidence of hitcher pests
- 3. Practice good inventory control
- • Use good inventory control to ensure accurate tracking to identify the location and origin of all shipments
- 4. Avoid storing trees in muddy, weedy or grassy areas
- • To reduce exposure to unwanted pests and foreign material always store trees upright in clean pest free areas
- 5. Inspect trees during all phases of the operation
- • Ensure trees are inspected during pruning, shearing, harvesting, grading, baling, storage and loading
- 6.Remove all foreign material
- • Remove any soil, weeds or foreign material from trees before loading
- 7. Keep trucks and containers clean
- • Keeps all trucks and containers clean and insect free during all phases of production
- 8. Maintain concise accurate records
- • Keep documented records of all production practices during all phases of production
