Canadian Christmas Tree Growers to Meet in New Brunswick

The Annual Meeting for the Canadian Christmas Tree Growers' Association will be held on Friday and Saturday, August 20 and 21, 2010, in beautiful Woodstock, New Brunswick.  The business meeting will commence at 9:00 AM on Friday morning.  As the day progresses there will be some business presentations from industry partners.  Some of the key topics on the table this year will be a dialogue about a mechanism that will allow Christmas tree producers to participate in federal horticultural programs and the international regulation of plant products for health and safety protocols.   Border inspections are only likely to increase.  (In fact, Saturday morning's agenda will include a full presentation from Canada and Americam Border Services.)

Another key agenda item, amongst many others, will be a discussion as to how the proposed United States Christmas tree levy will impact Canadian growers and exporters.  To register for this conference and meeting, please follow this link, 2010 CCTGA Registration, to get a pdf registration form.  Saturday's presentations and field tour will include an update from Dr. Peter Silk. who has been developing an extremely powerful pheromone for one of our most severe pests.  Dr. Silk will now be able to speak about his first year's work with this new compound.  Also on the agenda is Daryl Lingley, from the Soil Food Web, who will be updating attendees about the methods his group is utilizing to enhance the productivity and health of soils.

The host committee has negotiated special rates with the Best Western Woodstock and the Howard Johnson Inn Woodstock (both are on the registration form).  The link to the Town of Woodstock, just below the picture above, will also take you to an excellent map of the town.

Trees for our Troops’ Families 2009

Valcartier, Quebec: On December 5th, 2009, the Canadian Christmas Tree Growers Association will present 1500 natural Christmas trees to the families of Canadian troops on the base. Trees will also be delivered to Canadian Forces Bases across the country.

There will be a presentation at CFB Valcartier at 10AM Saturday December 5th, 2009.

The Honorable Josée Verner, Minister of Intergovermental Affaires, President of the Queen's Privy Council, Minister for
La Francophonie and Minister responsible for the Quebec City Region will be proud to take part in this grand family event. Please visit the CCTGA’s new website www.canadianchristmastrees.ca

Myles MacPherson, the president of the CCTGA says: "Canadian Christmas tree growers from across the country appreciate the services and efforts of Canadian troops serving outside of Canada. We can’t send trees to Afghanistan and other places, but we can give a Christmas tree to their families here in Canada. It’s our way of saying thanks and we’re thinking of you."

This is the third year that the CCTGA has given trees to the families of all Canadian troops serving overseas and in Afghanistan.
